Former San Francisco Giants star Hunter Pence is stepping up to the plate for environmental activism with his latest community initiative in the Bay Area. The beloved MLB veteran has launched the “Green Glove Crew,” a volunteer program encouraging fans to make a positive impact on the environment while earning unique rewards – including the chance to hang out with Pence himself at a Giants game.

Join The Green Glove Crew

Pence announced the initiative through his Instagram account, inviting followers to “Get In The Game” by participating in the Healthy Planet Project’s environmental volunteer efforts. The program kicks off on May 2 with the organization’s first community project of the season.

In the Instagram post, Pence explains that volunteers can track their service hours to earn prizes and exclusive experiences. One of the initial incentives includes a special “Green Glove Crew” t-shirt that participants can receive after logging their volunteer hours.

“Who’s ready to Get In The Game?! Volunteer with me to make an impact in the Bay Area one hour at a time, and track your hours to win awesome prizes and experiences (like hanging with me at a Giants game!),” Pence wrote in his announcement.

Building On Environmental Advocacy

This new volunteer program appears to be an extension of Pence’s ongoing environmental advocacy work. Just days before this announcement, Pence shared a retrospective post about his participation in last year’s Climate Week in San Francisco, writing: “A look back at last year’s Climate Week in San Francisco, where community and sustainability collided to care for our Earth. Excited to continue building on that momentum this year!”

The Green Glove Crew seems to be the next step in translating that momentum into tangible community action, giving Bay Area residents a structured way to contribute to environmental causes alongside the former MLB All-Star.

Pence’s Deep Bay Area Connections

Hunter Pence’s commitment to the Bay Area comes as no surprise to those familiar with his career. Pence played for the San Francisco Giants during two separate stints (2012–2018 and 2020), becoming a fan favorite and helping the team win World Series championships in 2012 and 2014.

Beyond his achievements on the field, Pence has maintained strong ties to San Francisco since retiring from baseball. He and his wife Alexis frequently participate in local events and have embraced the city as their home. In a recent Instagram post about hosting a Ralph Lauren store opening in San Francisco, Pence noted: “We love seeing iconic brands show up in the city we love and call home!”

Combining Baseball And Community Service

Pence has successfully merged his baseball background with his community service efforts. His charismatic persona and distinctive energy that made him popular during his playing days now fuel his environmental initiatives.

The four-time All-Star has remained active in baseball circles while expanding his influence into other areas. Recent social media posts show him discussing training techniques with student-athletes and sharing stories from his playing days, including meaningful advice he received from baseball legend Nolan Ryan during his minor league career.

How To Get Involved

Interested volunteers are directed to visit healthyplanetproject.org to learn more about the Green Glove Crew and sign up for the May 2 kickoff event. The program appears designed to accommodate various levels of participation, with the “one hour at a time” approach making it accessible to busy Bay Area residents.

By tracking volunteer hours through the program, participants can work toward different tiers of rewards, with the opportunity to attend a Giants game with Pence himself serving as a premier incentive.

The initiative combines environmental stewardship with the chance to connect with one of San Francisco’s beloved sports figures, creating a unique volunteer opportunity for baseball fans and environmentally conscious community members alike.

As baseball season gets underway, Pence continues to demonstrate his versatility beyond the diamond, channeling his energy and passion into creating positive change in the community he calls home.
